The designation nylon insert locknut or a nyloc nut is also known as a polymer insert lock nut or an elastic stop nut. A nyloc nut is a type of locknut that is available with a nylon collar that increases friction on the screw thread.
The position of a nylon collar insert is at the end of the nut; With the inner diameter or ID produced slightly smaller as compared to the broader diameter of the screw. The screw thread of the mating fastener does not cut into the nylon insert. However, the insert gets elastically deformed over the threads. The insertion, as a result of friction, locks the nut against the screw - caused by the radial compressive force. In turn, this results in the deformation of nylon. A DIN 985 Nyloc Nut generally retains its locking ability up to a temperature of about 250 °F.
In a typical installation process of a nylon insert lock nut, one needs to expect some amount of nylon displacement. The displacement that is experienced by nylon would depend on geometry. The geometry includes the nylon ring, thread tolerance of the external threads along with the size of the cavity holding the nylon ring, and more. Prevention of displacement of nylon in a Stainless Steel Nyloc Nut is achievable by slowing down the installation speed. Moreover, keeping their parts warm to reduce them from getting glassy.
The ASME B18.16.6 is a Standard that covers the complete general, mechanical, dimensional, and performance requirements for the nylon insert locknuts (inch series ). These requirements include proof load prevailing torque, as well as torque tension. The intent of these requirements is for nylon locknuts at room temperature. Carbon steel, (inch series )nylon insert locknuts of varying grades are covered here.
The grades include grades N2, N5, & N8 in styles NE (1⁄4 inch to 11⁄2 inch), NU (1⁄4 inch to 3 inches), NTU (1⁄4 inch to 3 inches), NTE (1⁄4 inch to 11⁄2 inch), NM (#2 to #12), NTM (#2 to #12), as well as hex flange (1⁄4 inch to 3⁄4 inch). This Standard also envelopes all-metal hex (#4 to 11⁄2 inch) along with a hex flange (1⁄4 inch to 3⁄4 inch) locking nuts for the specific grades. These grades include grade A, grade B, grade C, grade F, and grade G. The designated nut designs including the ASME B18.16.6 Nyloc Nut as American National Standards.
The ASME B18.16.6 also specified the geometry and finish requirements for the external threads used in the testing of nut performance. Perhaps the unique aspect of these nuts is that the external threads require a specific set of finish, which according to Grade D of ASTM F1137, is a solution of zinc phosphate and oil. During submissions of these nyloc nuts to a laboratory for testing, the specimens have to undergo tests at ambient temperature environments. Nylon insert lock nuts, which tend to experience field issues, typically, pass all tests per specification ASME B18.16.6.
