Description
Copper-cobalt-beryllium alloy UNS C17540 is a copper alloy that has moderate strength and about 50% IACS conductivity. It has high electrical conductivity, hardness, ductility, and excellent resistance to softening at elevated temperatures. It also has good to excellent corrosion resistance and excellent cold workability. UNS C17540 is available in mill hardened tempers and heat treatable and ductile tempers. It has applications in fuse clips, fasteners, springs, switch and relay parts, electrical conductors, and welding equipment. The nominal composition of beryllium copper is 97.2% Cu, 2.05% Be, 0.5% Co, and 0.25% Si. Beryllium copper is the strongest copper-based alloy, with a strength of up to 1,400 MPa (200,000 psi). It has a solid melting point of 1590 °F (866 °C) and a liquid melting point of 1800 °F (982 °C). The use of copper beryllium and beryllium-containing materials is not banned, restricted, or otherwise limited by any country worldwide. However, inclusions of copper-beryllium in the skin can cause beryllium sensitization. If skin reactions should occur, consult a doctor. Do not allow particles from hand contact to get into the eyes since this may cause injury to the eyes or tissue.
